Setup, Tuning & Maintenance

It should be mentioned that it is impossible to “tune” a bow past the ability of the archer shooting it. This means is that if you cannot shoot consistent groups at a specific distance, you cannot tune the bow at that distance.

It is also worth differentiating between a well set up bow, with centre-shot and cam timing set within specification, and a bow tuned into the shooting style of the archer using techniques like group tuning.

Setup vs Tuning vs Maintenance

“Setup” is the process of setting the bow up correctly. It includes making sure that everything is within tolerance and safe to shoot. This is vital for all archers.

“Tuning” is the process of taking a well set up bow and making it work well with the archer. This is achieved by making adapting it to be forgiving for the archer. Once you’ve tuned the bow, you need to maintain that tune over time, as well as refine it.

The focus here is more on intermediate to expert archers, as the benefit may be reduced for a novice who still lacks consistency.

Always remember, a bow will not make you shoot better. It will only be less likely to expose your flaws and incidental mistakes. What makes you a better archer is time behind the bow.
