Drill: Shooting Holes

Objective

Work on a consistent set-up, hand position and grip.

Preparation

  • Your complete bow setup, ready to shoot, with as many arrows as you like.
  • Set up a paper tuning jig, allowing enough space between the paper and the arrow stop that an arrow can clear the paper before entering the butt.
  • Set up the paper on the paper tuning jig such that you have multiple aiming spots, like a grid or multiple dots. Each dot will only be shot once.

Technique

  1. Shoot an arrow at each dot on the target.
    • Ensure to have consistent pressure in the grip, top to bottom in the hand on the thumb pad, as well as on the sides of the bow with the index finger and thumb.
  2. Inspect each arrow hole for variations.
    • Inconsistent left/right tears can be cleared up by applying consistent pressure on the sides of the bow. Your aim is a consistent hole from shot to shot.

Notes

  • You don’t need to hit every dot on the target perfectly. The aim is a consistent tear.
  • Good quality arrows which fly consistently is important. You may need to Nock Tune your arrows beforehand.

Stepping it up

  • You can vary the distance to increase or decrease the aiming difficulty.
